Softback and hardback
(casebound) books are just two types of binding available. Smyth sewing refers to the Smyth machine that sews the sections or signatures of a book with thread. The folded signature is fed on a saddle and sewn through the spine fold to the next signature with a loop stitch. Smyth sewn books can have softback covers or be casebound with a cover material wrapped over board, which creates a hard cover and spine.
